Da Nang is a mid-sized coastal city with an outsized draw: at its heart, a thirty-kilometre run of Pacific sand — headland-to-headland My Khe and Non Nuoc beaches, a Marble Mountains skyline behind them, and riverfront districts so distinct they feel like separate small cities. But the region doesn’t stop at the city limits. Within an hour of the Han River sit a UNESCO trading port (Hoi An Ancient Town), a Cham brick-tower complex in a jungle valley (My Son Sanctuary), the imperial citadel city of Hue, and the 500-metre spine of the Hai Van Pass, with its cloud forests, French-era rail tunnels and fishing hamlets. One motorbike or one shared van covers nearly all of it.
Most trips fit one of three shapes. Beach-first: sleep in My Khe Beach or An Thuong and walk to sand and coffee — or in Bac My An for the same beach access with quieter nights. City-first: base in Hai Chau or along the Han River Waterfront for markets, bridges and the nightly Dragon Bridge light show, in Son Tra for the peninsula’s monkey forests at your doorstep, or in Nam O — the cheapest coastal beds in the city and its most interesting fish-sauce village food. Escape-first: the outlying towns — a lantern-lit room over Hoi An’s old-quarter canals, a mountain-side stay near Ba Na Hills, or a lagoon base at Lang Co with fishing boats from the doorstep. Many visitors stitch the two: four city nights, two Hoi An nights.
Da Nang remains one of the best-value beach cities in Southeast Asia. Doubles in An Thuong and Bac My An start around $18–28 most of the year; My Khe seafront and central Hai Chau run $28–55 for equivalent rooms; Hoi An and Lang Co hold $22–40 outside holiday weekends. The price curve is predictable: floors in September–November (rain shoulder) and again in February–March, peaks around Tet Lunar New Year, at Reunification Day in late April, and across June–August. A rice-plate lunch still runs $2–4, a bia hoi $0.50–1, a Grab across town $2–3, and the coastal train to Hue costs less than a beachfront cocktail.
You will not need a car for most of this site. Grab bikes and taxis cover the city for pocket change; the coastal rail line reaches Hue in two-and-a-half scenic hours over the Hai Van Pass; and shared vans and yellow shuttle buses link Hoi An in about forty minutes for the price of a bowl of pho. Local buses from the city terminal fill the gaps — My Son, Ba Na, Lang Co, the Son Tra peninsula loop. A rented motorbike earns its keep for chaining coastal viewpoints in one day; our getting-around guide maps the whole system.
The region rewards walkers and riders as much as beachgoers: the Son Tra and Marble Mountain walks run from beach coves to the 696 m summit of Ban Co Peak; cycle routes follow the beachfront promenade and rice-paddy lanes into Hoi An; the parks & nature range from APEC riverfront gardens to Son Tra’s primary rainforest the size of small islands. Eat your way through the street-food guide, time your trip by the events calendar, follow a ready-made itinerary from 24 hours to a week, or plan around small people with the kids guide. Every entry names the nearest place to sleep, one click from live prices.
